The Learners Collective x Harris Science Academy East London: Supporting the Next Generation in a Sixth-Form Open Evening

The Learners Collective (TLC) were recently invited by one of our Partner Schools, Harris Science Academy East London, to support their Open Evening event for prospective sixth form students. As a school dedicated to transforming the outcomes of some of London’s most under-resourced pupils – and recently judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted – our Scholars were honoured to advise, guide, and inspire students and their families as they embark upon one of their most important transitions in their academic journey.

Sharing First-Hand Experience

We invited several of our Scholars – our near-peer role models from world-leading universities – to support the event. As each of our Scholars come from similar backgrounds to the schools’ students – with some only recently having completed their A-Levels – they were able to offer tailored guidance as to achieving academic excellence from a shared understanding of their lives both inside and outside of the classroom.

We hosted a workshop where students and their parents heard from our Scholars’ journeys during their A-Levels. The sessions covered all aspects of their own sixth form experiences. Scholars shared tips on everything from revision techniques and time management to subject choices and staying motivated during difficulty. Parents also welcomed the opportunity to seek advice on how they can best support their children during their A-Levels.

Advice Beyond the Classroom

In addition to the academic advice, Scholars also discussed the mindset and practices needed to succeed. Some of our Scholars spoke candidly and honestly about the adversities they faced during their A-Levels, and the strategies they used and support they sought to overcome and succeed.

A key message was that sixth form is about more than just achieving good grades. It’s a period of growth where students begin to find themselves and further explore the impact they wish to make on the world. With attendees asking Scholars about intrinsic motivation, well-being and the importance of mentors, it was obvious that students left excited by the school’s opportunity to support their flourishing in both exams – and beyond.

An Inspiring Talk from Our Founder - Rory

One of the evening’s standout moments was a heartfelt speech by our Founder, Rory Gaskin, who shared a powerful keynote on the importance of self-belief. Drawing deeply from his own experiences, he spoke powerfully about the importance of resilience, the value of learning from setbacks, and discovering inner strength from overcoming adversity.

His words resonated with many, particularly students facing similar challenges, offering reassurance that they are not alone. Rory’s story illustrated how hardship, when embraced with determination, can be transformed into a driving force for success, both academically and beyond.

Reflecting on the evening, Headteacher Dan shared:

“It’s not academic prowess that can stop our students from achieving, but a lack of networks and the self-belief to smash the class ceiling. Hearing Rory and other Scholars speak provided role models and motivation for our students and reinforced our message that anything is possible for them.”

The response from students and parents alike was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how refreshing it was to hear a perspective grounded in both authenticity and hope.

Looking Ahead

We left the event feeling energised by the many conversations we had, and grateful to be part of such a supportive school community. Events like these remind us why we do what we do. As an education service, we are committed not just to academic achievement but to helping students develop the skills, confidence, character, and network of role models they need to thrive long after their exams are over.

A huge thank you to Dan and Will for inviting us to Harris Science Academy East London, and to all the students and families who took the time to attend and speak with us. We look forward to continuing our work with the school and supporting students in any way we can.

If you're a school leader or teacher and are interested in having us visit your school for a talk, workshop, or open evening, we’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to get in touch through enquiries@learnerscollective.com.
