- What is a TLC Scholar?
We offer pupils more than tutors - we connect them with TLC Scholars. Scholars are high-achieving university students who not only gained top grades to attend elite institutions, but have overcome underestimation and life adversity to acheive success. Alongside academic excellence, their journeys and stories highlight their qualities as role models and leaders - ambition, courage, determination, resilience and vision. Scholars are therefore some of the most exceptionally talented young people in the UK - attracting individuals from all walks of life: more than 70% are from low-income backgrounds, over 50% are ethnic minorities, almost 40% attend Oxford or Cambridge - and virtually all attend a top-10 UK university. Having walked similar paths to the students they serve, Scholars are near-peer role models who are uniquely qualified to teach, mentor, lead and inspire. We met with four of our Scholars who share the importance of role models - and what it means for them to be a Scholar at TLC: Chiko - Law, University College London; Trainee Solicitor at Freshfields Ella - Politics and International Relations, Queen Mary’s University London Ehsan - History, University College London Dominic - Physiotherapy, University of Birmingham Ruth - Medicine, University College London If you are a university student or graduate interested in becoming a Scholar, please click here to apply.
- ‘Beyond the Grades’ - BBC WM Interview
Rory Gaskin, Founder and CEO, in conversation with Merisha Stevenson On Results Day, TLC’s Founder and CEO, Rory joined BBC presenter Merisha Stevenson to share his perspective on what success really means for young people. Rory reminded listeners that while exam results are important, they are not the only measure of achievement. “ True success is built on resilience, character, and the ability to turn setbacks into opportunities ,” he explained. His advice to students who did not achieve the grades they had hoped for was clear: your future is not defined by a single results day. During the interview, Rory also spoke about the origins and motivation behind The Learners Collective. Drawing on his own educational journey and lived experiences, he explained how TLC was founded to offer young people more than traditional tutoring ever could. The vision was — and remains — to create a learning community that combines academic support, mentoring, and life-skills development, equipping students not only to succeed in exams but to thrive in life. - The Learners Collective x Harris Science Academy East London: Supporting the Next Generation in a Sixth-Form Open Evening
The Learners Collective (TLC) were recently invited by one of our Partner Schools, Harris Science Academy East London, to support their Open Evening event for prospective sixth form students. As a school dedicated to transforming the outcomes of some of London’s most under-resourced pupils – and recently judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted – our Scholars were honoured to advise, guide, and inspire students and their families as they embark upon one of their most important transitions in their academic journey. Sharing First-Hand Experience We invited several of our Scholars – our near-peer role models from world-leading universities – to support the event. As each of our Scholars come from similar backgrounds to the schools’ students – with some only recently having completed their A-Levels – they were able to offer tailored guidance as to achieving academic excellence from a shared understanding of their lives both inside and outside of the classroom. We hosted a workshop where students and their parents heard from our Scholars’ journeys during their A-Levels. The sessions covered all aspects of their own sixth form experiences . Scholars shared tips on everything from revision techniques and time management to subject choices and staying motivated during difficulty . Parents also welcomed the opportunity to seek advice on how they can best support their children during their A-Levels. Advice Beyond the Classroom In addition to the academic advice, Scholars also discussed the mindset and practices needed to succeed . Some of our Scholars spoke candidly and honestly about t he adversities they faced during their A-Levels , and the strategies they used and support they sought to overcome and succeed. A key message was that sixth form is about more than just achieving good grades . It’s a period of growth where students begin to find themselves and further explore the impact they wish to make on the world. With attendees asking Scholars about intrinsic motivation, well-being and the importance of mentors, it was obvious that students left excited by the school’s opportunity to support their flourishing in both exams – and beyond. An Inspiring Talk from Our Founder - Rory One of the evening’s standout moments was a heartfelt speech by our Founder, Rory Gaskin, who shared a powerful keynote on the importance of self-belief . Drawing deeply from his own experiences, he spoke powerfully about the importance of resilience, the value of learning from setbacks, and discovering inner strength from overcoming adversity . His words resonated with many, particularly students facing similar challenges, offering reassurance that they are not alone. Rory’s story illustrated how hardship, when embraced with determination, can be transformed into a driving force for success , both academically and beyond. Reflecting on the evening, Headteacher Dan shared: “It’s not academic prowess that can stop our students from achieving, but a lack of networks and the self-belief to smash the class ceiling. Hearing Rory and other Scholars speak provided role models and motivation for our students and reinforced our message that anything is possible for them.” The response from students and parents alike was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how refreshing it was to hear a perspective grounded in both authenticity and hope. Looking Ahead We left the event feeling energised by the many conversations we had, and grateful to be part of such a supportive school community. Events like these remind us why we do what we do. As an education service, we are committed not just to academic achievement but to helping students develop the skills, confidence, character, and network of role models they need to thrive long after their exams are over. A huge thank you to Dan and Will for inviting us to Harris Science Academy East London, and to all the students and families who took the time to attend and speak with us. We look forward to continuing our work with the school and supporting students in any way we can. If you're a school leader or teacher and are interested in having us visit your school for a talk, workshop, or open evening, we’d love to hear from you. The Learners Collective (TLC) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Etio Global to deliver critical training as part of the Attendance Mentoring Pilot Expansion (AMPE) project. This £15 million Department for Education (DfE) initiative aims to evaluate how mentoring may reduce persistent absence in schools across England. Delivered by Etio on behalf of the DfE, the Pilot takes a ‘mentoring-first’ approach to address the national attendance challenge. Over the next three-and-a-half years, nearly 60 mentors will be recruited to support more than 10,000 secondary school students across the country who are persistently or severely absent. TLC joins leading education partners – ImpactEd, Thrive and Oasis Community Partnerships – to provide expert training for mentors. A Bespoke Training Programme TLC’s training was designed and delivered by Rory Gaskin , Founder of TLC, alongside Corrine Pearson , Trust Vice Principal QofE/PP Strategy at Haberdashers’ Academies Trust South. This three-part training program, tailored to the specific demands of the AMPE, draws on the latest research and TLC’s unique approach to mentorship used across its programmes . It equips mentors with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver impactful, pupil-led mentorship – with trust and belonging at the core of their practice. Key content includes: The barriers preventing some students from attending school; Why some students struggle with the school environment; The multi-layers of influence on a young person’s need; and How to balance relational mentoring with goal-oriented outcomes. Rory shared his personal motivation for the project: “With 150,000 children absent from school for half or more of the academic year, addressing the specific barriers young people face attending school is more important than ever . I was once one of these students, and so I genuinely believe in the transformative role mentors can play in fostering trust and belonging – which are central to improving attendance.” He added: “ Through our partnership with Etio, we’re shifting the narrative from an ‘attendance challenge’ to an ‘attendance opportunity’ . We have designed a training programme which empowers mentors with the tools to truly understand their students, collaborate with schools, and deliver meaningful lasting impact. Simply put, it’s a chance to change the lives of thousands of young people .” Holly Bevan-Yorston, Senior Project Manager at Etio said: “We’re delighted to be working with The Learners Collective as one of our training partners in supporting our mentors prepare for this exciting new programme.
